Pompei

a quando non diventò romana. Divenne una città splendida con i
suoi monumenti, la fiorente economia, ma questo periodo non
durò molto a lungo perchè improvvisamente un terremoto la
danneggiò gravemente, e quando ormai le ricostruzioni stavano
per terminare, un altro cataclisma si abbattè sulla città:
l'eruzione del Vesuvio. Ma la fine di Pompei segnò l'inizio
della sua affascinante storia di oggi.

founded in the VIIIth century b.C., was controlled by many
different rulers before it fell under roman dominion. It grew
into a city of splendid monuments, with a flourishing economy.
The good times were brought to a sudden end when an earthquake
damaged the city seriously. Reconstruction works were barely
finished when another natural disaster struck: the eruption of
the volcano Vesuvius. But the destruction of Pompei became the
beginning of the fascinating story we can tell about the city
today.
Pompei,
gegründet im VIII jahrhundert v. Chr., wurde von verschiedenen
mächten kontrolliert und fiel schließlich unter römische
kontrolle. Unter Rom wuchs es zu einer glänzenden stadt heran,
mit bedeutenden monumenten und einer florierenden wirtschaft.
Diese goldene phase kam zu einem jähen ende, als die stadt
durch ein erdbeben schwer beschädigt wurde. Der wiederaufbau
war kaum beendet, als neues unheil über Pompei hereinbrach: der
große ausbruch des Vesuvius. Aber das ende des alten Pompei war
zugleich ein anfang für das grofle interesse der nachwelt.
